We are no longer in the early phase of predictions for 2013. They are lining up: arriving by the day as journals, websites and communities all compete to bring us their thoughts for the year. One has to sort the predictable wheat from the subversive chaff. I particularly liked this small gem swimming against the trend. From Beverley Simon at musee-solomon
People are over saturated with social media. They will gradually remove themselves from all but a few networks, blogs, etc. So many ads come in everyday that they have lost their impact. Most people just delete them before reading them. Social media will function more to alert friends of rip-offs than to encourage sales. Only the most clever sales campaigns will have any impact. More and more advertisers will be leaving social media and returning to snail mail, print and other traditional ads. Social media will continue to be a dating hook up, gossip fest and avenue for “gurus” to sell seminars. But real businesses will use social media less and less.
We can test this. By 2014, all the media that was around in 1984 will become more profitable. The Grauniad will be able to sign with relief. I don't think so.
