Science in Fiction picks up a story from Technovelgy about the use of active electronically scanned array lasers (AESA) with a weapons component. Listing the fictional references to death rays, Bill Christensen points out that the fears of Wellsian death rays were one of the factors behind the investigation of radio direction finding in the 1930s. Such radars could be used to focus a pulse of energy on a target's radar or targeting systems.
